Any advice for the cause of acute needle-like pains in the lower calf?

Every once in a while I get a stabbing needle pain in my lower calf in the same place. It's usually just a niggle and may happen once every two or three months so I tend to ignore it or forget about it before seeking medical advice. But today I was sitting at my desk and it happened with much more severity and the individual shots of pain lasted longer. It knocked the wind out of me from the shock of the instant pain which has made me think this could be something serious. It is not a knife stabbing pain - it's more like sharp needles stabbing and wrenching their way deep from within the lower part of my calf. Is this just a cramp? Do I need to drink more water? Do I have DVT? If there is anyone else who has experienced this kind of needle like pain, and had it diagnosed before, I'd love to hear from you.
